Back in 1996, Land Rover created a team building event for Land Rover North America employees called TReK. The inter-retailer event was put together to challenge staff across the U.S. and Canada in a variety of tasks ranging from off-road driving to use of accessories, and more. Think of it as “Camel Trophy Lite.” Below is a video from the 1999 version, which originally aired on Speedvision, and was held 20 years ago in Bodega Bay, California.
The very orange Land Rover Discovery Series II models used were equipped with 285/75R16 BFGoodrich Mud Terrains, custom bumpers, and WARN XD9i winches (back then, simply the XD9000). And of particular note, the competition to who can spool up their winch the best (starts at 5:33).
The whole thing was was pretty entertaining to watch. From the driving to the mountain biking, these were fun competitions. It’s kind of a shame we don’t see more modern versions these days from a host of manufacturers. It was a great way to showcase the vehicle’s ability as well as their employees’ abilities to use the product.
